Week 1 project health policy and health promotion
One health promotion/disease prevention problem from the Healthy People 2020 Objectives is to “Increase access to comprehensive, culturally competent, quality primary care services”. This objective seeks to reduce disparities in healthcare access for individuals of lower socio-economic status or those belonging to minority groups. Access to primary care can be a major barrier for these individuals due to cost, lack of transportation, and language barriers that can prevent them from seeking care when needed. Additionally, cultural competency among healthcare providers may also be an issue as they are not always trained in how best to serve diverse populations or understand their unique needs and concerns.
By increasing access to quality primary care services and addressing cultural competency among health professionals, this goal strives to improve overall health outcomes by reducing disparities in preventive services and early diagnosis of diseases or chronic conditions that require long-term management such as diabetes and hypertension. Improving access would also help decrease costs associated with emergency room visits which often occur when people do not have adequate access to regular medical care for their condition management.
