Introduction: Academic service learning provides students with an opportunity to put into practice what they have learned in class by working with and assisting community organizations. This experience is important as it provides students with hands-on experience and helps them to develop new skills. In this paper, I will reflect on my service learning experience and discuss the connection between the service experience and my two selected course objectives: 1.7 applies goal-directed processes involved in the transmission and assimilation of information and 3.4 Analyze and implement patient health and safety goals.
Service Learning Experience: My service learning experience took place via a virtual Zoom meeting on February 10th. The audience was a group of nursing students who were about to graduate with an ASN degree and enter the nursing field. The topic of discussion was protecting oneself from Covid-19.
Connection to Course Objectives: Goal-directed processes are important in the transmission and assimilation of information. The service learning experience provided an opportunity to apply these processes in real-life situations. During the Zoom meeting, I was able to apply the goal-directed process of learning and understanding new information. As the presenter discussed ways to protect oneself from Covid-19, I was able to take notes, ask questions and understand the information presented. This experience enhanced my learning by allowing me to apply the knowledge gained in class to a practical situation.
The service learning experience also provided an opportunity to analyze and implement patient health and safety goals. As nursing students, it is important to ensure that patients are provided with a safe and healthy environment. During the Zoom meeting, we discussed various ways of protecting oneself from Covid-19, which is important not only for personal safety but also for the safety of patients. Implementing these health and safety goals is an essential part of nursing practice, and this service learning experience provided an opportunity to learn how to do so in a practical setting.
Community Needs: The service learning experience also met community needs by providing information on how to protect oneself from Covid-19. This information is important, particularly during the ongoing pandemic, as it helps to prevent the spread of the virus. By providing this information to nursing students, who will soon be entering the nursing field, the community is being served by ensuring that healthcare workers are well-informed on how to protect themselves and their patients.
Civic Responsibility/Civic Engagement: The service learning experience also fostered civic responsibility and civic engagement by providing an opportunity to learn how to protect oneself and others during a public health crisis. By taking steps to protect oneself from Covid-19, individuals are not only protecting themselves but also those around them. This sense of responsibility and engagement with the community is essential during times of crisis and is an important part of being a member of society.
Conclusion: In conclusion, the service learning experience provided an opportunity to apply the knowledge gained in class to a practical situation. It also met community needs by providing information on how to protect oneself from Covid-19 and fostered civic responsibility and engagement. This experience helped me to develop new skills and enhanced my learning by allowing me to apply the knowledge gained in class to a practical situation. It is important to continue participating in service learning experiences as they provide valuable hands-on experience and help to develop new skills.
