Abstract:
The aim of this paper is to investigate the relationship between nurse to patient ratios and patient safety. A systematic review of the literature was conducted, focusing on studies that explored the impact of nurse staffing on patient outcomes. The results suggest that an increase in nurse to patient ratio is correlated with a decrease in patient safety. The findings demonstrate the importance of adequate staffing in ensuring patient safety, and highlight the need for ongoing research in this area to improve patient outcomes.
Background:
Patient safety is a critical concern in healthcare, and the role of nursing in promoting patient safety is well established. One factor that has been linked to patient safety is nurse staffing levels, specifically the nurse to patient ratio. Previous research has suggested that high nurse to patient ratios can have negative consequences for patient safety, including increased rates of medication errors, falls, and infections. Despite these findings, nurse staffing levels continue to be an ongoing concern in healthcare, with many facilities struggling to maintain adequate staffing levels. This paper will explore the relationship between nurse to patient ratios and patient safety, with the hypothesis that an increase in nurse to patient ratio is correlated with a decrease in patient’s safety.
