Identifying a health care-related problem and a target population
The national health-promotion and disease-prevention issue I have chosen is childhood obesity. This is a major public health concern in the United States as it increases risk of developing chronic conditions such as diabetes, heart diseases and other metabolic syndromes. Additionally, socio-economic implications associated with this can be severe too since childhood obesity leads to greater likelihood of having difficulties finding employment later on.
For Application 1, I will likely choose children between 3-5 years old as my target population; this age group reflects those who are most vulnerable to developing serious medical complications due to overweight/obesity. Also it’s important to note that factors contributing towards this problem are multifaceted so any intervention must take into account environmental influences like access to nutritious food & physical activity options etc.
Moreover since this particular group may not always have direct control over their circumstances – parental involvement or support from community members could prove beneficial in helping them overcome such issues.
In conclusion, targeting kids aged 3-5 year’s provides opportunity for early interventions that can potentially reduce long term consequences related to childhood obesity.
