I will articulate my beliefs, assumptions, and values related to the concept of “person.”
My beliefs about the concept of person are that every individual is unique and deserving of respect and dignity. I believe that people should be treated as whole beings, considering not only their physical needs but also their emotional, spiritual, and mental well-being. I assume that every person has their own experiences, beliefs, and values that shape their perception of the world and their own health.
One of my core values is empathy, and I believe that this is an important aspect of caring for others. I believe that by understanding the experiences and perspectives of others, we can better meet their needs and provide them with the care they deserve. I also value the importance of autonomy and believe that individuals should have control over their own health and well-being, and that healthcare providers should empower them to make informed decisions about their own care.
A personal experience from clinical practice that demonstrates and reflects my beliefs, assumptions, and values is when I was working as a nursing assistant in a long-term care facility. I was caring for an elderly woman who was terminally ill, and I was struck by how much she valued her independence and control over her own life. Despite her physical limitations, she still made an effort to participate in activities and maintain her independence as much as possible. I remember being struck by her resilience and determination, and I felt a deep sense of respect for her.
I took the time to listen to her and understand her experiences, and I was able to provide her with care that was tailored to her needs and values. For example, I helped her participate in activities that she enjoyed, such as gardening, even though it was a challenge for her physically. I also made sure to provide her with information about her health and treatment options so that she could make informed decisions about her care. This experience demonstrated to me the importance of treating individuals as whole beings, considering their unique experiences and perspectives, and valuing their autonomy and independence.
