The Theory of Human Caring, developed by Jean Watson, is an evidence-based practice that focuses on promoting holistic care and recognizing the patient’s experience. It emphasizes the importance of developing a therapeutic relationship between patient and nurses to provide quality care. The core concepts of this theory are carative factors (caring actions) and transpersonal caring processes. Carative factors consist of 10 elements that focus on providing compassionate care for patients, such as maintaining trust, respecting personhood, providing comfort in physical environment and promoting healing relationships. On the other hand, transpersonal caring processes refer to connecting with the higher purpose or spirituality in life during a nurse-patient encounter.

As future Advanced Practice Nurses (APNs), these concepts inform their role in providing holistic care for patients by emphasizing the importance of building strong relationships through caring actions like empathy and respect for individual beliefs. These APNs should foster collaboration with other healthcare team members while being mindful of their own values—such as understanding suffering—and creating a safe healing space with warm touch presence. Additionally, when creating plans of care they would need to recognize cultural diversity among their patient population while striving towards self-actualization and transcendence through spiritual sharing experiences within their professional roles.
