Quality improvement models | NURS 8302 | Walden University
The improvement model I selected is the Plan-Do-Study-Act (PDSA) cycle. The PDSA cycle is an iterative, four-step approach to improving processes and services by testing small changes. It was developed in the 1940s as part of Total Quality Management (TQM). The goal of the PDSA cycle is to identify areas for improvement, plan and test interventions, study their effects, and act on the results.
The four steps of PDSA include: plan, do, study and act. In the plan phase, teams develop a hypothesis about how a change will improve outcomes or processes; they then determine what data they need to measure its effectiveness. In the do phase, teams implement the change on a small scale to test if it has any desired effect. During this step data should be collected so that progress can be measured against objectives set during planning. Once testing is complete in the do step, teams analyze their findings in order to understand what worked well and what didn’t in the study stage before moving onto action which involves adapting or scaling up successful interventions from previous cycles or discarding those that did not achieve desired results .
Overall this model provides organizations with an efficient way of making improvements that are measurable and repeatable for continual growth over time. Furthermore it allows for rapid prototyping which enables quick learning about successes as well as failures resulting in improved services/processes for better outcomes overall.
