The Selected Nursing Theory is the Roy Adaptation Model (RAM). This theory can be applied to a nursing practice problem in my unique setting, which is an acute care hospital unit. RAM focuses on the holistic approach of individual adaptation and adjustment to environmental stressors. As nurses, our role is to support and assist patients with their ability to adapt and adjust while they are hospitalized and face physical, psychological or social stressors.
In my practice, I often encounter situations where a patient may have difficulty adjusting due to a lack of understanding of the healthcare system or unfamiliarity with the hospital environment. Utilizing RAM allows me to assess the patient’s adaptive behaviors and develop strategies that promote adaptation. This might include providing emotional support, educating them about their healthcare options, explaining procedures clearly and helping them understand how they can manage their own health once discharged from the hospital.
Additionally, I can apply this model by assessing stimuli from both external factors such as family dynamics or chronic diseases as well as internal factors such as self-care practices or spiritual beliefs that could impact the patient’s ability to cope with their illness. By recognizing these different components I am able to gain greater insight into what needs may prevent successful adaptation for each individual patient allowing me provide more effective interventions tailored specifically for them. In doing so we are able better empower our patients by promoting independence during recovery which ultimately leads improved outcomes for all involved.
