Theory, research, and practice | Nursing homework help
Theory and nursing conceptual models can be used to reflect on a problem in nursing practice. For example, if there is a lack of resources or staff in a particular setting, the Theory of Human Caring by Jean Watson can be used to determine how best to address this issue. The theory states that nurses should provide holistic care with compassion and respect for the patient’s autonomy. In order for nurses to effectively provide quality care despite limited resources, they will need support from their colleagues and additional training in stress management, time management skills, and delegation. Another model which could be used is Virginia Henderson’s Need Theory which emphasizes that all patients have the same basic needs: breathing, eating/drinking, elimination, movement/exercise, sleep/resting, hygiene/grooming etc. This model can help nurses prioritize these needs within their scope of practice while also taking into consideration any emotional needs they may have while caring for a patient. From these two examples it’s clear that theory and conceptual models can be instrumental tools in reflecting on problems faced by nurses when providing care.
