Shared governance is an organizational structure in which all members of a team, including nurses and physicians, participate in decision-making. It encourages collaboration between health care professionals and other stakeholders to ensure that decisions are made based on the best interests of patients. Shared governance allows for input from all levels of staff so that everyone has a voice in the decision-making process. This type of approach to governing healthcare organizations increases patient safety by taking into account multiple perspectives when making decisions.
In my current facility, shared governance could be implemented through the formation of committees or councils where both clinicians and non-clinicians can provide their expertise on different topics related to patient care and safety. These committees could meet regularly to discuss challenges faced by the organization as well as possible solutions for addressing them. All members should be encouraged to openly share ideas without fear of repercussion or criticism so that meaningful conversations can take place. Additionally, there should be clear communication from leadership regarding what issues will be discussed at each meeting and how decisions will be made as well as follow up after meetings have concluded. Finally, it is important that everyone involved understands the importance of mutual respect towards one another’s opinions in order for shared governance to work effectively within the organization
