Cultural empowerment mod 3 discussion
I have chosen the African American cultural group for my SLP. African Americans represent a minority population in the United States, and many of them face challenges that may lead to health disparities. Negative enablers are factors that can influence an individual’s health behavior in a way that is detrimental to their overall well-being. Examples of negative enablers within the African American community include poverty, lack of access to healthcare, poor nutrition habits, limited education opportunities, and exposure to violence or trauma.
The effects of these negative enablers can be seen when looking at health disparities among different racial groups. African Americans often suffer from higher rates of chronic illness such as heart disease or diabetes compared to other ethnicities due in part to their lack of access to needed medical care and nutritional advice. Additionally, lower educational attainment levels within this population limit job prospects and resources necessary for healthy living which can contribute further to health disparities and prevent individuals from obtaining adequate physical activity or purchasing nutritious foods on a regular basis.
Furthermore, exposure to violence or trauma may lead some individuals within this group towards risky behaviors such as smoking or drinking alcohol which can have long-term consequences on their overall mental and physical wellbeing. These behaviors may also increase their risk for developing chronic illnesses like cancer later in life contributing further to health disparities between races/ethnicities in America as a whole. By recognizing potential sources of inequality among different populations it will help promote initiatives geared towards reducing these types of gaps allowing all individuals regardless of ethnicity equal opportunities for leading healthier lifestyles with improved outcomes regarding overall quality life.
