Drugs are classified into categories based on their chemical structures and the effects they produce in the body. These categories include: stimulants, depressants, narcotics, hallucinogens, and anabolic steroids.
Stimulants: Stimulant drugs act on nerve cells in the brain and throughout the body to increase alertness, concentration, and energy levels. Examples of stimulant drugs include caffeine, amphetamines (Adderall), cocaine, and MDMA (ecstasy).
Depressants: Depressant drugs slow down activity in the central nervous system by affecting neurotransmitters that control conscious thought processes. They reduce anxiety or stress but can also cause drowsiness and impair coordination or reaction time. Examples of depressant drugs include alcohol, benzodiazepines (Valium), barbiturates (Phenobarbital), GHB/GBL (gamma-hydroxybutyrate/gamma-butyrolactone), ketamine (Ketalar) and opioids such as oxycodone or codeine.
Narcotics: Narcotic drugs are opioid medications used to relieve severe pain. They work by activating opioid receptors that are found mainly in the brain but also throughout other parts of the body including organs like intestines or skin. Common examples of narcotic drugs include morphine sulfate, hydrocodone bitrate/acetaminophen tablets (Vicodin) , oxycodone hydrochloride tablets(OxyContin), fentanyl patches(Duragesic).
Hallucinogens: Hallucinogen medications work by altering communication between neurons which change perception of reality leading to hallucinations as well as altered moods or feelings such as euphoria or depression. Common examples of hallucinogenic medications are lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD), psilocybin mushrooms(magic mushrooms), peyote cactus(mescaline).
Anabolic Steroids: Anabolic steroids mimic testosterone hormones in order to build muscle mass quicker than what’s possible with exercise alone. These medications have dangerous side effects including liver damage when taken over long periods of time so they’re mostly used for medical purposes where a doctor prescribes them for a short period only if necessary – such as when treating delayed puberty caused by hormonal imbalances or male pattern baldness due to high levels of testosterone production naturally occurring within men’s bodies at certain ages.
