Case study, chapter 23, professional identity and image
The Center for Nursing Advocacy is a non-profit organization that works to promote the image of nursing and foster its professional status. The Center’s primary goal is to improve public recognition, respect, and understanding of the profession in order to increase access to quality health care.
Truth About Nursing (TAN) is a key initiative of the Center for Nursing Advocacy that aims to challenge inaccurate or negative portrayals of nurses in the media. Through TAN’s work, they have raised awareness about the issues surrounding nursing public image and how it affects recruitment, retention, and public access to health care services.
They use a variety of strategies including monitoring, media education campaigns; responding quickly when bias occurs in print or multimedia outlets; working with reporters on accurate stories about nursing; educating healthcare executives on how best to communicate effectively with their staff; and engaging creative professionals like producers, writers, directors etc., to create positive messages about nurses and healthcare.
