A similarity between the two genres is that they both have a focus on live performance. Both jazz and blues rely heavily on strong improvisational skills, allowing for a unique performance each time depending on the mood of the musicians or audience. Although different instruments are typically used to play them, both genres are often seen performed at open-mic nights in small bars and clubs. Additionally, many famous singers have been influenced by both styles, including Billie Holiday, Etta James and Buddy Guy.
