Iom future of nursing report and nursing iom future of nursing report
The Institute of Medicine (IOM) report, “The Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health”, was released in 2010 and had a profound impact on nursing practice. The IOM report recognized the integral role nurses play in healthcare and provided four key recommendations for advancing their practice: 1) increasing the proportion of nurses with baccalaureate degrees; 2) expanding nurse residency programs; 3) removing scope-of-practice barriers; and 4) increasing leadership opportunities.
In response to the IOM report, state-based action coalitions were created across the United States to address issues identified in the report and begin implementing its recommendations at a local level. These coalitions are focused on specific initiatives such as removing scope-of-practice barriers, creating new pathways into nursing careers, developing more inter-professional collaborations between nurses and other healthcare providers, improving access to care for under served populations, promoting diversity amongst the nursing workforce, advocating for evidence-based practice through research & quality improvement efforts, addressing workplace safety concerns & work environment issues affecting retention rates of nurses within facilities etc..
These initiatives have led to positive changes in nursing practice such as improved patient outcomes due to increased collaboration among healthcare team members utilizing an inter-professional approach; greater access to care for under served populations through improved recruitment & retention strategies; increased education levels & competencies amongst nurses leading to higher quality standards of care; reduction of administrative burden allowing more time dedicated to direct patient care activities etc.. Ultimately these efforts have resulted in significant improvements in overall health outcomes & better health systems throughout America.
