The federal court system consists of three levels: the Supreme Court, which is the highest court; the appellate courts, which review lower court decisions; and the district courts, which are trial-level courts. Each state has its own court structure that mirrors this model. The highest level in each state is usually called either the Supreme Court or a Court of Appeals. Below them are intermediate appeals courts and then local trial courts. Some states also have specialized courts for certain types of cases such as family law or juvenile justice. In addition, many states also offer mediation services to help parties resolve disputes without going to trial.
