Hormone replacement therapy | Nursing homework help
Strengths
Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) is used to help alleviate symptoms of menopause and can be very effective in treating several aspects of this transition. The most common hormones used are synthetic estrogen and progesterone, which can often reduce hot flashes, night sweats, vaginal dryness, and other physical symptoms caused by the hormonal imbalances associated with menopause. HRT may also help improve mood swings and other psychological changes experienced during this period of life. Additionally, HRT may provide some protection from osteoporosis, heart disease or stroke later on in life.
Limitations
There are some potential risks that come along with using hormone replacement therapy (HRT). While these risks have decreased significantly over time as a result of improved dosing regimens and safer medications being developed, possible side effects include increased risk for certain types of cancers such as breast cancer; increased risk for blood clots; headaches; nausea; fluid retention; weight gain; bloating; irregular menstrual bleeding; anxiety or depression; changes in libido or sexual function; and an increase in cholesterol levels. Some women may also experience hair loss or acne when taking HRT. Furthermore, not everyone responds to the same treatment plan so individualized care should be taken into consideration when deciding whether to begin HRT.
