Incivility in nursing practice | Nursing homework help
Incivility can be defined as “the use of rude, disrespectful, and inconsiderate language or behavior by one person toward another.” (Gulledge et al., 2019). This type of behavior is considered unprofessional and can create an atmosphere where staff feel unsafe or unsupported. Incivility has been linked to numerous negative outcomes including decreased job satisfaction, reduced interest in continuing education, burnout, lower patient care quality and safety standards, as well as higher levels of stress among nurses (Olsen & Ostergaard 2020). It is important for organizations to understand the causes and effects of incivility in order to develop effective strategies for dealing with it.
