The most important intentional strategies in this situation are the following: (1) establishing a therapeutic relationship; (2) providing support and direction; (3) exploring alternatives; (4) enhancing problem-solving skills; and (5) developing healthy coping skills. Establishing a therapeutic relationship is critical for building trust with the client, which will allow them to feel comfortable sharing their feelings and experiences. Providing support, direction, and guidance can help the client feel heard and understood as well as empowered to take action towards finding solutions. Exploring alternatives helps clients become aware of different choices available to them so that they can make informed decisions about their lives. Enhancing problem-solving skills enables clients to identify problems more quickly and find effective ways of dealing with them. Finally, developing healthy coping skills equips clients with tools they need to manage stressors in their environment without resorting to unhealthy behaviors or reactions.
