Assignment 2: practicum – week 10 journal entry | NURS 6650 – Psychotherapy With Groups and Families | Walden University
Client 1:
This client is a 20-year-old male who is experiencing persistent feelings of sadness and depression, as well as difficulty sleeping. Based on the DSM-5 criteria, it appears that this individual meets the full criteria for Major Depressive Disorder (MDD). MDD is characterized by a depressed mood most of the day, nearly every day for at least two weeks. Other symptoms include decreased interest in activities once enjoyed, changes in appetite or weight, sleep disturbances, feelings of worthlessness or guilt, fatigue or loss of energy, concentration difficulties and thoughts of death/suicide. This client’s symptoms align with those listed above and would therefore warrant a diagnosis of MDD.
Client 2:
This client is a 15-year-old female who has been experiencing intense fear and panic when out in public places such as malls and stores. She avoids these situations due to her fear and is starting to skip school because she worries about having an attack while there. Based on the DSM-5 criteria, it appears that this individual meets the full criteria for Panic Disorder with Agoraphobia. Panic disorder with agoraphobia involves recurrent unexpected panic attacks along with avoidance behavior related to fears of having additional panic attacks in certain situations like being outside alone or being in public places away from home. The avoidance can also lead to significant distress or impairment in social activities like going to school. This client’s symptoms match those described above which would warrant a diagnosis of Panic Disorder with Agoraphobia.
