Studies have shown that African Americans are more likely to be diagnosed with hypertension compared to other racial groups. Additionally, African Americans experience higher rates of morbidity and mortality due to hypertension than other racial groups.
According to the Centers for Disease Control, African American adults are more than twice as likely as white adults and almost three times as likely as Asian/Pacific Islander adults to have been diagnosed with hypertension. Furthermore, African Americans aged 20 or older also had the highest death rate due to high blood pressure in 2015-2017, at 83 deaths per 100,000 population.
