Every nurse is a leader
Clinical Nurse Leader is one formal role in which a nurse can be in a position of leadership. Clinical Nurse Leaders (CNLs) are advanced practice registered nurses who are accountable for leading interdisciplinary teams to achieve positive patient outcomes. The CNL role includes developing, implementing, and evaluating evidence-based care plans; coordinating communication among healthcare team members; advocating for patients’ rights and needs; promoting health maintenance and disease prevention strategies; managing resources effectively; and providing direct clinical care as needed. CNLs often take on roles such as primary care provider, case manager, consultant, educator or project manager.
