One historical perspective regarding the delivery of health care in the United States is that prior to World War II, there was very little access to health care for individuals and families. Health services were mainly provided by physicians working in private practice or hospitals which largely catered to patients who could afford it. Additionally, medical treatments at the time were not as advanced and reliable as they are today.

Another historical perspective is that during World War II, the government began passing legislation to address issues such as rising costs of health care and lack of access. This included the creation of Medicare and Medicaid programs which helped millions gain access to healthcare coverage regardless of their income level. Additionally, advances in medical technology also led to improved treatments and better outcomes for patients suffering from a variety of illnesses or injuries.
