My philosophy regarding euthanasia is that it should never be taken lightly, and only employed as a last resort in situations where the individual’s physical or mental suffering becomes unbearable. I believe that a compassionate approach must be taken towards those who are considering euthanasia, and that decisions related to this sensitive topic should always take into account an individual’s wishes and values.
Furthermore, I feel that there must always be sufficient medical conditions present for euthanasia to even be considered as an option, with all other treatments being exhausted beforehand and every effort made to ensure adequate pain management before any further steps can be undertaken. Ultimately, while I do not believe in unnecessary suffering or prolonged end of life anguish; at the same time I also recognize that ending one’s own life prematurely may not always be the “right thing to do” either.
Thus proper consultation with professionals – such as doctors or social workers – knowledgeable about both patient autonomy and ethical considerations is essential when approaching this difficult issue.
