Brexit, short for “British Exit”, is the UK’s withdrawal from the European Union. It was triggered by a referendum held in June 2016 when citizens voted to leave the EU. The main points of Brexit include: an end to freedom of movement between the UK and other EU countries; an end to paying money into the EU budget; changes to regulations on goods and services that are traded with other member states; reform of certain aspects of immigration policy; and negotiations over future trade deals with non-EU countries. The final terms of Brexit were agreed upon in December 2020 which will see tariffs eliminated on UK-EU trade with key areas such as fisheries being managed separately.
