Development of nursing standards of practice for your state
The process for the development of nursing standards of practice in my state, Pennsylvania, begins with the publication of a statement by the Board of Nursing outlining their initiative to develop new or revised standards. The Board then publishes an explanatory statement that includes information about how stakeholders can participate in the development process by submitting comments or attending public forums.
The next step is for the Board to seek input from organizations related to nursing practice such as professional organizations and universities. After collecting all relevant feedback, they create a draft document which outlines proposed changes or updates to existing regulations. This draft is reviewed by an appointed committee before it is submitted to the full board for final approval. Once approved, these standards become effective immediately and are published on the website of both Pennsylvania’s Department of Health and Board of Nursing.
