Principled negotiation step 2 – focus on interests, not positions-how
Identifying interests can be done by reflecting on past experiences and noting which activities have been enjoyable or interesting. It is also important to pay attention to the topics that one finds themselves naturally drawn towards, as these could signal an area of interest. Once a few potential interests have been identified, research should be conducted in order to gain more knowledge about them and determine if they are an ideal fit for the individual.
The most important interests are those that align closely with one’s values, passion and skillset, as this will ensure they remain motivated and engaged in whatever it is they do. Additionally, pursuing interests that bring personal satisfaction or professional growth is beneficial as it may encourage further exploration or lead to new paths of discovery.
