How government agencies and private organizations utilizes media to | health promotion | Rasmussen College System
One example of a health promotion campaign that infringes on people’s rights and freedom is New York City’s “Sugar Free Summer Challenge.” This campaign aimed to reduce sugar consumption by encouraging residents to sign a pledge to avoid added sugars for the entirety of summer 2021. While this may seem harmless, there are several issues with it such as infringement of dietary autonomy and potential discrimination based on socioeconomic status (i.e., those who can afford more “luxury items” containing sugar vs those who cannot).
Additionally, the lack of options available within the challenge makes it difficult for individuals to go against its message without feeling judged or ostracized which violates one\’s right to freely express themselves without fear of repercussions. Not only does this put an undue burden on NYC citizens but also sets a dangerous precedent in terms of what policies governments can implement when concerning public health matters.
