The consequences of a nurse labor shortage can have significant implications on patient care and mortality rates. Nurses play a vital role in providing direct patient care, managing complex symptoms, offering emotional support and more. With fewer nurses available to provide this important service, there is an increased burden on those that are able to work which can lead to burnout or compassion fatigue.
This can result in decreased quality of care for patients as well as higher risk for medical errors and adverse events. In addition, there is evidence that suggests shortages in the nursing workforce can lead to increased mortality rates due to delays in treatment or inadequate monitoring by healthcare professionals with limited resources. Therefore it’s essential that measures be taken now to address this potentially serious problem before it becomes even more pronounced down the line.
