The current problem is that people with a history of heavy drinking behavior are at high risk for health complications such as liver cirrhosis, hepatitis C virus infection, and other infectious diseases. Unfortunately, there are not enough services or interventions in place to address the underlying causes of this problem or provide the necessary support needed to help individuals reduce their risky drinking behavior. There is an opportunity for change in terms of providing more comprehensive resources and supports for this population to help them lead healthier lives.
