NPI numbers, or National Provider Identifier numbers, are standardized identifiers that are assigned to healthcare providers. Nurse practitioners (NPs) have NPI numbers just like any other healthcare provider. An NPI number is used by the government and insurance companies in order to accurately bill for services provided by an NP. It is also used when referring patients to another provider, verifying credentials of a provider, and submitting claims electronically. The NPI number provides information about the nurse practitioner’s role(s), specialty type(s), and any professional affiliations they might have with organizations such as hospitals or medical schools. Additionally, it also helps protect patient privacy since all associated health records can be linked back to this unique identifier instead of a name or address.
