Assignment: applying current literature to clinical practice
The article I selected is titled “Group Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Depression: A Formal Evaluation”. The participants in the group are adults aged 18-59 who had been diagnosed with depression and were referred to attend a short-term CBT group therapy program in a community mental health center. They were selected based on self-reports of their current symptoms and patterns as well as past response to individual psychotherapy.
The setting of the group was at the same community mental health center, where they met once per week for 1 hour sessions over a span of 8 weeks. Each session changed slightly in its focus but generally focused on discussing their thoughts and experiences with each other, cognitive re-framing exercises targeted towards certain topics or life events, and homework assignments to carry out between sessions or after the conclusion of the program.
At the end of 8 weeks, participants completed assessments regarding their levels of symptom severity which indicated that there was statistically significant change when compared to baseline scores before beginning treatment.
