The first study selected for critique is a quantitative research article entitled “The Prevalence of Pressure Ulcer in the Hospital and Skilled Nursing Facility Using Padding or Foam Dressing”. Published by authors Julia C. Stroud, Edwin Hui, PhD, Thomas J. Kliegman, MD* in 2013, this research aimed to investigate the prevalence of pressure ulcers among hospital and skilled nursing facility patients who used padding or foam dressings as part of their standard care protocols (Stroud et al.,2013). The study was conducted using a sample size of 279 subjects from two different facilities: a 100-bed acute care hospital with an intensive care unit (ICU), and a 400-bed long term care facility that provides post-acute amenities such as rehabilitation services and ventilator weaning programs. Pressure ulcer assessments were made during admission to the respective facilities at various points during the participants’ stays including once per week while they remained hospitalized or residing in the skilled nursing facility. This observational study utilized descriptive statistics to analyze collected data on factors associated with pressure ulcers such as age group, gender and mobility status.
