Explain how the performance measures may change if the unit of analysis is the organization as a whole, and not the specific operating unit.

I have chosen to review a healthcare operating unit focused on pediatric ambulatory care. This type of service is one that I am familiar with, covering a wide range of patient needs from well-child checks to chronic condition management and specialist referrals.

The three recent journal articles I have selected are:  (1) “Dashboards for Performance Measurement in Healthcare Organizations”, Medical Care Research and Review (2019),
(2) “Using the Balanced Scorecard as an Approach for Quality Improvement in Health Care”, The Ochsner Journal (2017), and (3) “Performance Measurement with Electronic Clinical Data: Challenges & Opportunities”, American Medical Informatics Association Symposium Proceedings (2016). Each article provides insightful information regarding the use of dashboard systems, balanced scorecards, and performance measurement strategies specifically within healthcare settings.

For my four categories of measurement I choose: Clinical Outcomes, Patient Satisfaction, Operational Efficiency/Cost Savings, and Staff Engagement/Retention. These respective categories will allow me to accurately quantify the success or failure associated with this specific ambulatory care unit due to their direct correlation clinical outcomes which are crucial when assessing any healthcare setting. Additionally by including patient satisfaction metrics these can be utilized to gauge approval ratings given services while operational efficiency/cost savings will determine financial stability surrounding given project as staff engagement/retention cover personnel aspects ensuring sustainability moving forward.

For each measure its calculation should be based upon relevant data gathered from medical records along-side other pertinent documents such as surveys or costs reports helping paint full picture how successful initiative has been far. Furthermore if analysis were taken broader organizational level more qualitative parameters like productivity levels among clinicians may included provide stronger results tailored towards organization’s overall performance instead individualized departments efforts.
