Health promotion | NRS 429
The ethnic minority group selected is the Hispanic/Latino population in the United States. The current health status of this group can be described as “generally positive”, with a life expectancy that is higher than both Black and White Americans combined. Race and ethnicity do influence health for this group; for example, Hispanic/Latinos are more likely to suffer from obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease due to disparities in income level between their households and other groups. Additionally, they are more likely to experience language barriers when accessing healthcare services.
Nutritional challenges faced by Hispanics/Latinos relate mainly to socio-economic factors such as limited access to healthy foods or insufficient knowledge about proper nutrition. Cultural values around food also have an effect on dietary habits; traditional diets consist of high levels of saturated fats while being low in certain vital vitamins and nutrients. Barriers resulting from culture, education level (illiteracy), socioeconomic status (low income) etc., further contribute obstacles faced by this ethnic group when seeking treatment related medical care plus even preventative measures like vaccinations too…
