Client A is a 53 year-old female with a past medical history of hypertension, diabetes, and depression. She has been prescribed medications such as metformin and lisinopril for her diabetes and hypertension respectively. Her depression is managed primarily through psychotherapy sessions as she prefers non-pharmacological treatment options.
Using the DSM-5 criteria, the diagnosis that best aligns with Client A’s symptoms would be Major Depressive Disorder (MDD). This disorder can manifest itself in numerous ways but common signs and symptoms include anhedonia (loss of enjoyment in activities), distorted self-image or guilt feelings, insomnia/excessive sleeping patterns along with feelings of hopelessness or worthlessness which could interfere with daily functioning abilities noticeably. Additionally other physical indicators may also present themselves like headaches/muscle pains which are not caused by any underlying illness meaning all these factors considered together provide strong evidence supporting case MDD specifically.
