The differences between men and women’s approach to healthcare and maintenance can be seen in the clinical setting. Women tend to be more proactive about their health, often scheduling preventative care such as physical exams, mammograms, and Pap smears regularly instead of waiting for a noticeable problem (Becker & Tranmer 2020). Women are also more likely than men to talk openly with their doctors about lifestyle changes or other issues they may have (Olson et al., 2019). When female family members are present, they usually take an active role in helping the patient make decisions regarding their health by providing support and offering advice (Yaesoubi et al., 2018).
In terms of common health issues that affect women specifically in my local community, breast cancer is a major concern. According to the latest statistics from our local cancer center, one in eight women will experience it at some point during her lifetime (Cancer Care Ontario 2020). Additionally, young women are often burdened with mental health struggles due to stressors related to school or work life as well as increased pressures stemming from modern social media platforms. This can lead to depression or anxiety which negatively impacts overall wellbeing (Arbués-Fernández et al., 2021).
Women tend to go their providers more than men do due several factors including higher rates of medical conditions like depression and anxiety; access barriers such as lack of financial resources or transportation; cultural beliefs that prioritize seeking healthcare when ill; greater exposureto positive messages on preventive healthcare;and lower cost barriers for contraception services provided by physicians(Fletcher&Benson2020) Furthermore, women might feelmore comfortable discussing sensitive topics with doctors thenmen since traditional masculineculturefrequently discouragesmenfromseeking helpformentalhealthproblems(Karavanićetal.,2019).
