Inclusion of nurses in the systems development life cycle
The consequences of a healthcare organization not involving nurses in each stage of the Systems Development Life Cycle (SDLC) when purchasing and implementing new health information technology systems are numerous. First, without nurse input, there is a risk that the software being purchased may be inadequate for supporting patient care. For example, buying system without consulting any nurse could mean that important data or capabilities needed to support evidence-based nursing practice would not be included. Furthermore, if nurse advice on security protocols is not sought prior to implementation, critical patient data could become vulnerable to attack by hackers or other malicious third parties. In such cases this could result in serious harm caused due to unauthorized access to confidential information and inaccurate diagnosis based on incorrect data supplied by the system which guards against these issues (McGonigle & Mastrian 2017).
