Another regulation that often differs is related to prescriptive authority. Some states allow certain APRNs full practice authority under varying conditions while others do not currently recognize full scope prescriptive authority [3]. Other factors influencing these decisions include whether or not they must collaborate with a physician or provide patient services under Medical Direction protocols [4][5]
This can significantly affect how APRNs deliver care within their state or region. For instance, if an APRN has full scope prescriptive authority they will be able to independently prescribe medications without any oversight whereas in jurisdictions where this is not allowed they may be required to follow Medical Direction protocols which could limit their ability to independently order tests or treatments based on a comprehensive assessment and diagnosis of patients . This will also likely result in increased time spent consulting & communicating with treating physicians thus reducing time available caring for other patients[6]
