Out of the three characters, Lin Kong expresses sympathy the most. He is a doctor who is married to Manna Wu but in love with his former wife Shuya and has been waiting for nineteen years to get an official divorce from her so he can remarry. His situation, while not ideal, is understandable as he was not able to obtain a divorce during the Cultural Revolution due to restrictions on marriage and family laws imposed by Mao Zedong’s government. In addition, even though he knows that there is no hope for him and Shuya being together romantically due to her beliefs about loyalty and fidelity, he still tries to communicate with her out of respect for their shared history. Furthermore, despite having grown distant from Manna due their different personalities over time as well as her own personal frustrations at his commitment issues with Shuya; Lin continues trying his best reconcile these differences in order maintain peace in their home without shirking responsibility or running away from his duties as a husband or father. It’s clear that despite all tribulations put his way – Lin exhibits selfless compassion towards those around him showing empathy understanding each ones respective predicaments .
