Nurses in all practice domains and settings have a unique set of information needs tied to patient care and documentation that require the use of health information technology (HIT). These include an understanding of HIT capabilities available for safety promotion and patient centered care, access to patient data stored in EHRs or other IT systems, knowledge needed to interpret clinical decision support tools built into electronic health records such as alert pop-ups, and awareness of how to properly leverage technologies for collaborative communication between team members. In addition to these competencies nurses must also gain an appreciation for different types of patient-care technologies available and understand what options exist to best support their practices from intake through discharge planning.
For this paper I chose the FierceHealth IT article ‘How Telehealth is Shaping Nursing Practice’ by Kyra Auffermann (2018) which discusses the impact telehealth has had on nursing practice in both positive and negative ways including cost savings associated with remote monitoring as well as potential data privacy risks due its lack of standardized policies across states. In order to complete this assignment I used informatic skills such as word processing abilities when composing my paper digitally, along with knowledge gained throughout our course regarding DIKW models which helped me think critically about how technology can help transform healthcare delivery today notably through enhanced connectivity between providers and patients over large geographical distances thanks to telemedicine services like Skype or Facetime consultations. Furthermore I was able to draw upon experience gathered earlier in my professional career concerning existing EHR implementations at various healthcare organizations during visits performed for CPHQ review preparation where I observed firsthand how Electronic Medical Records were contributing positively towards improved safety outcomes though increased provider visibility into current medication regimes administered by pharmacists compared against those prescribed by clinicians along with wellness parameters taken from tracking devices linked directly into hospital databases.
After completing this assignment it is clear that the accelerating trend towards digitalization resulting from technological advances has added significant challenges especially within nursing profession given staffing constraints especially experienced across rural areas who face a severe nurse shortage issue today making traditional bedside care more difficult than ever before though telenursing pathways offer hope as long as historical ethical dilemmas related data integrity issues are adequately addressed first either legally via federal regulations or protocol modifications generated within each individual US state prior widespread adoption being enabled.
Therefore looking ahead it would seem critical moving forward that nurse leaders focus their efforts on taking steps necessary so that they remain current regarding advancements happening both inside classroom setting while simultaneously devoting time outside academic sphere keeping track actual changes occurring industry namely reviewing latest research results published medical literature followed up examination regulatory blueprints adopted recent years ensuring newly acquired pertinent information gets disseminated effectively downline colleagues most importantly providing efficient continuing education programs focused teaching staff effective application applicable date based expertise aligning quality control goals mindfully designed appropriate operating procedures implementing leveraging found amongst community members.
