Promiscuous mode refers to the ability of a network card (NIC), to be set up to receive all traffic on its network instead of just packets addressed to it. Wireshark network traffic analyzers can now capture all network traffic and not just traffic to a particular NIC.
The “Name Resolution of Network Layer names” in the Capture > Options dialog allows Wireshark to resolve IP addresses to hostnames, making it easier to identify the devices on the network. It could prove useful in capturing network traffic because it helps to identify the origin and destination.
The network switch connects several devices to a computer network and forwards data packets to their destination device using the device’s Media Access Control address (MAC). The network hub connects several devices to a network, by sending all the incoming data packets again to all devices. The network traffic in switched networks is limited by sending only the destination data packets to Wireshark. In networks using hubs all devices are able to receive the data packets.
