The minimum wage is a contentious issue with valid arguments on both sides. The primary argument in favor of an increase in the minimum wage is that it would help to lift workers out of poverty and reduce income inequality. Supporters argue that an increase in the minimum wage would provide a much-needed boost to the incomes of low-wage workers, many of whom are struggling to make ends meet. Furthermore, an increase in the minimum wage would also stimulate economic growth by boosting consumer spending and decreasing government dependence on social welfare programs.
On the other hand, opponents argue that an increase in the minimum wage would lead to increased unemployment and business closures. They argue that as businesses are forced to pay workers more, they will have to either raise prices, reduce hours, or lay off employees. This, in turn, would lead to fewer job opportunities and a weaker economy. Furthermore, businesses with limited profit margins may find it challenging to pay higher wages.
As for my home state, research suggests that the current minimum wage of $XX is not enough to keep up with the cost of living. According to the MIT living wage calculator, the living wage for a single adult in my state is $XX and for a family of four is $XX. Given this data, it is clear that many workers in the state are struggling to afford basic necessities, despite working full-time. Furthermore, the state has a relatively high cost of living and a relatively low median wage.
Moreover, unemployment history in my state suggests that the state is capable of handling increase in minimum wage, Unemployment rate has been consistent over the past few years and not significantly impacted by the changes in minimum wage.
Additionally, research shows that raising the minimum wage does not have a significant impact on unemployment, for example, a study by the Economic Policy Institute (EPI) (2020), found that minimum wage increases had little to no impact on employment levels.
In light of this evidence, I would argue that my state representatives should support an increase in the minimum wage. Such an increase would provide a much-needed boost to the incomes of low-wage workers and help to reduce poverty and income inequality in the state. Furthermore, an increase in the minimum wage would not lead to significant increase in unemployment and would help to stimulate economic growth by boosting consumer spending and decreasing government dependence on social welfare programs.
