Diverse group: Military veterans
Military veterans, who have served in the armed forces of a country, often face a number of challenges upon returning to civilian life. These challenges can include physical and mental health issues, difficulty finding employment, and adjusting to civilian culture. Veterans may also have difficulty with the transition from a highly structured and hierarchical environment to the less rigid structures of civilian life. Additionally, military veterans are often underrepresented in leadership positions within companies.
Upon conducting research, it is found that military veterans are underrepresented in the Fortune 500 companies and in leadership positions within those companies. According to the Veterans Affairs Department, only 4.5% of the Fortune 500 companies have a veteran at the helm, while only 7.8% of the top 50 companies have veterans in leadership positions. This is a relatively low number considering that around 10% of the adult population of the United States are veterans.
To become socially responsible towards military veterans, big organizations can adopt a couple of strategies:
- Veterans Hiring Programs: Organizations can establish veterans hiring programs that provide preference in recruitment to veterans. This can help veterans secure employment and start their careers.
- Employee Resource Groups: Organizations can establish employee resource groups for veterans that provide support and resources for veterans in the workplace. This can help veterans feel more supported and valued in the workplace. Additionally, Employee resource groups can provide mentoring opportunities for veterans and help to educate other employees about the experiences of veterans.
Both of these strategies are essential in not just promoting the representation of veterans but also creating an inclusive and supportive environment for veterans in the workplace. Such initiatives can also provide tangible benefits to the organizations through the transferable skills veterans bring with them from their military service such as leadership, teamwork, resilience, and adapt.
