Suicide Myths:
Myth: People with mental disorders are the only ones who attempt suicide. Truth: Although mental disorders can raise the likelihood of suicide, suicide can be considered by anyone. Myth: Talking to someone about suicide will increase their chances of it happening. FACT: Asking someone to talk about suicide doesn’t increase their risk. However, it can show that they care and you are open to listening. Myth: Some people who discuss suicide don’t necessarily commit. The truth is that suicide thoughts and behavior should be treated seriously. Myth: If someone decides to kill themselves, then there’s nothing that you can do. Truth: It is possible to offer support and help for someone going through a crisis.
Assessment strategies:
Talking to a caller is a good way to establish their suicide risk. These are some ways to assess risk.
- Discuss suicide thoughts with your doctor.
- Find out their current levels of suicidal thoughttion (frequency and intensity),
- Evaluate your current suicide plan and possible means.
- Determine their degree of despair and determine if they can see other alternatives.
