Abstract:
The paper will discuss the factors that lead to causality in noothetic explanations, and the differences between sufficient and necessary causes. In addition to their importance in criminal justice, the concept of correlation and reductionism will be addressed. This will include discussion of the policy implications as well as suggestions for improvements based upon these concepts.
Introduction:
It is important to take into account certain conditions or criteria in order to establish causality. Three criteria can be used in nomothetic explanation to determine that an event A causes another event B. The criteria for nomothetic explanation are temporal precedence and covariation. Important distinctions between sufficient and necessary causes are made. It’s also important to understand the concept of reductionism, correlation and their use in criminal justice. The paper will cover each one of these issues in detail.
