The government used contraceptives to control the human population long ago. Extance (2016) states that male fertility is one government-supported contraceptive concept. The empirical study has led to the verification of this contraceptive concept by governments for the purposes of reducing global overpopulation. Elsimar Coutinho, a Brazilian fertility and sexual specialist, advocated the use gossypol for male contraceptives. Dr. Coutinho collaborated with the Chinese government during the 1960s in order to encourage contraception use among men. The government and the doctor tested 8,806 men with gossypol tablets in 1972 (Extance 2016, 2016). It was successful because it reduced the sperm count of males in a satisfactory manner. Contraception can have side effects. Low potassium levels were found in at least 66 people in the Gossypol study. Even after stopping taking the pill, men’s sperm counts did not recover to their normal levels. Contraception, despite the side effects it caused, was considered a way to control population growth.
Additional to stopping the movement of sperm in transit, further research into the gossypol pill showed that it also damaged epididymis glands in rats. These ducts are responsible for storage and retrieval of sperm following the production of testicles. The Chinese government and World Health Organization (WHO), determined in 1986 that gossypol wasn’t producing the desired outcomes. (Extance 2016, 2016). Families planning is now embraced by all levels of society and government, in addition to governments and organisations. But the emphasis has been on female contraception and not on men. To alleviate the negative effects of contraception on their wives, some men want to be involved in family planning. Coutinho noted, however that many males worry about losing their masculinity.
Gossypol is therefore a popular choice in most developing countries with rapidly growing populations. Brazil is an example of a country where the drug has been used to reduce bulls’ ability to reproduce. Gossypol, which is made from cotton waste is cheap in Brazil. Bulls are then allowed to ingest the feces. They engage in regular sexual activity, but they do not reproduce, farmers say. Gossypol was given to Bulls in order to reduce their natural sexual drive.
