Multiple Sclerosis (also known as multiple sclerosis) is an inflammatory and autoimmune disorder that can cause severe complications. Poser (2003, p. 3) states that the condition involves localized demyelination in the brain, spinal cord and axonal losses. Patients with the illness experience uncontrolled muscle spasms and visual loss. They also feel unable to control their bodies. The disorder can sometimes make the patient immobile. Multiple Sclerosis causes damage to the Central Nervous System myelin layer. This should allow axons and nerve impulses through the body to continue flowing, as per the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. Multiple sclerosis can cause scarring to the myelin sheath. When the myelin theyath becomes compromised, nerve impulses from the Central Nervous System become deformed. It can cause neuronal transmission modification, distortion or inhibition. About three million people are affected worldwide by Multiple Sclerosis. Half a million of these individuals live in the United States. (Boroch (2014) Multiple sclerosis is more common among people aged between 20 and 50. It is difficult to pinpoint the cause and treatment. It is possible to find a wide variety of opinions about its causes, treatment options, drug use, and the overall outlook.
1. Etiology
It’s not yet known the cause of this disease. After a long latent period, it is possible that the disease may be activated by one or more external factors. Multiple sclerosis has a wide geographic and demographic distribution. Prevalence increases with distance from the Equator, while it decreases in Polar Regions.
2. Ignorances
The condition is also subject to myths. There are many myths about multiple sclerosis. For example, people who claim they have multiple sclerosis believe they need to be in a wheelchair. Multiple sclerosis is not a condition that requires the use of a wheelchair. However, there are many people who do not need one. Around 75% continue to walk all their lives. Multiple sclerosis may also be misunderstood as infectious.
