The issue of hunger and food insecurity in America is one area that I’d like to explore for this series. The lack of affordable, nutritious food that is available for healthy living and exercise is called food insecurity. It is an issue that impacts millions in America, particularly low-income families and children.
This topic is chosen for several reasons. The first is that food insecurity affects large swathes of American society. The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) reports that in 2020 approximately 11.7% of American households were insecure about food. This includes 6.3% of children’s households. Millions of Americans struggle to feed their families and face difficult choices between buying food and paying rent and utilities.
The second is the negative impact that food insecurity has on people and their communities. Food insecurity can lead to poor mental and physical health, including malnutrition, obesity and diabetes.
