Commander-in-chief is the highest responsibilities the president has. This position has responsibilities that include managing relations between the US and the rest of world. In times of peace and war, this job can also be crucial. The president may use his authority to develop plans for the country or support the tactics of the troops (Cavalli 2011). In times of peace the president will be responsible for maintaining the readiness of the armed forces and their training. The president’s authority must also be monitored in order to avoid abuse.
Further restrictions should be made to the president’s powers so that both houses must agree on actions like going to war. Although the president can be the commander-in chief of the armed forces and Congress has the authority to declare war, it is not a constitutional right. The constitution’s Article II section 2 (Friedman 2011, 2011) and Article 1 Section 8 (Friedman (2011) govern these instructions. The American presidents are now able to conduct war without the need for authorization by Congress. Cavalli (2011) asserts that Congress could grant authorization even when the president requests it, in an effort to not appear hypocritical or unsupportive.
For regulating the President’s authority use, it is up to the Senate. This isn’t the case because the vast majority of the members are also from the same party as the president. Each chamber should decide on national security issues and how to deal with other nations in the future. The whole country will be better off if the president is in control, especially if the presidency is ruled by a dictator.
